THE CHALLENGE

The Central Square Business Improvement District initiated Starlight during a critical juncture for the city, the Commonwealth, and the nation. The challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic compelled us to reimagine solutions for deeply rooted issues of inequity in our communities, with a particular urgency around improving access to public spaces.

STRATEGIC APPROACH

We proudly collaborated in the creation of Starlight, a temporary intervention that metamorphosed a city-owned parking lot into an inclusive and freely accessible public space. Our partnership involved working closely with artists, architects, engineers, and various other professionals to ensure that every facet of this space was both secure and enjoyable for the community it was designed to benefit.

OUTCOME

Starlight has provided space for dance, exercise, performance, small business growth, learning, worship, and celebration. The project was so successful that it extended well beyond its original duration. Now in its fourth season, Starlight has proved how vital public space is for the community and what’s possible when that access is provided.
